Contemporary dance, butô inspiration

Izanami Company

Performer: Melvin Coppalle

Ohanami is a succession of scenes which presents passages, crossings, hybridizations; it combines dance, theatricality and voice, on very varied sound landscapes, passing from electronics to more traditional sounds.

Ohanami presents the body in all its paradoxes and proposes various dialogues between opposing forces, manifested in oscillations between self-control and letting go.

For this show, choreographer and dancer Melvin Coppalle drew inspiration from expressionist forms as well as butoh dance - in the vein of Mary Wigman, Ôno Kazuo and Ilka Schönbein, but also from the onnagata character present in Kabuki.
