This photographic project by Finnish and Norwegian artists Riitta Ikonen and Karoline Hjorth began as a play around Nordic folklore, and then evolved into an ongoing search for modern humans' sense of belonging to nature.

The series is produced in collaboration with retired people (farmers, fishermen and women, zoologists, plumbers, opera singers, housewives, artists, academics...). Each image of the series presents a solitary figure in the middle of a landscape, dressed with surrounding elements that indicate neither time nor place. Nature acts here as both content and context: the characters literally inhabit the landscape wearing sculptures created in collaboration with the artists.

As active participants in our contemporary society, these seniors encourage the rediscovery of a demographic group too often portrayed as marginalized or stereotyped. In this way, this project aims to generate new perspectives on who we are and what our place is in this world.
