Objectives

  • Proficiency in written and spoken Arabic

  • Knowledge of the Arabic-speaking cultural zone

  • Focus on contemporary modern Arabic

  • Proficiency in reading diverse styles of texts (media language, modern literature, classical literature)

  • Translation skills: French to Arabic and Arabic to French

  • Proficiency in a dialect (Maghrebi or oriental)

Skills

  • Systematic knowledge of the history, literature and cultures of the Arab world

  • Knowledge of Arabic-speaking societies

  • Language acquisition and proficiency in traditional academic exercises: explanation and commentary of texts or documents from various media (iconographic documents, civilization documents, literary texts, etc.) with application to the fields of basic knowledge related to the culture and civilization of the Arab-Muslim zone

  • Document analysis and summary

Course Content

Two levels are offered in year 1 (L1):

  • Beginners

  • Advanced

These levels depend on whether or not students have studied this subject at high school. Some of the classes are shared between the two levels. The minor option in history is recommended:

  • Semester 1 (Modern History + Contemporary History)

  • Semester 2 (Ancient History + Medieval History)
