This training is intended both for recent holders of the French baccalauréat and for those returning to studies.

Its objectives are to provide a solid musical knowledge base and to acquire knowledge and skills in the field of music. It combines historical, methodological and practical modules: history of music (from antiquity to contemporary music), musical training, writing, analysis, listening commentary.

Workshops give students an overall experience in different fields (jazz, traditional music, choirs, instrumental ensembles, amplified music, improvisation).

The prerequisites for successful completion of these studies are:

  • serious musical practice, specialized French baccalauréat, regional conservatories (CRRs), national music school,

  • a minimum level in:

    • music training: perfect reading of two musical keys (a third is desirable),

    • knowledge of music theory (intervals, tonality, chords and degrees),

    • melodic and rhythmic dictation,

    • sung and rhythmic reading / sight playing,

    • playing a musical instrument,

    • theory.

Skills

At the end of the course, students are able to:

  • place a work in its historical and stylistic context;

  • understand precisely its formal and language dimensions;

  • extract the salient elements and know how to use them musically for educational or research purposes;

  • identify the challenges involved within society and in relation to other artistic disciplines.

The musicology degree also provides a general humanities-based learning programme and the appropriate methodological tools for structuring reflection.
