The Rennes 2 research laboratory “Violence, Innovation, Policies, Socialization and Sports” (VIPS²), will be hosting an international symposium on the 30th of January entitled, The Legacies of Sport Events: Social Challenges, Critical Analysis and Scientific Perspectives.

The Olympic Games

The decision to host sport events, particularly "mega-events" like the Olympic Games, is often accompanied by questions of economic and social contributions as well as benefits for host countries. In the early stages of planning, many such events are assumed, a priori, to bring positive social impacts surpassing the period of the event itself. The Olympic Games are a good example of such an event. Yet, since the late 1990s, the debate around the legacies of the Games and other similar events have become major elements in all nominations.

Measuring the legacies and impacts that these events have remain a challenge. Rarely thought of as a long-term strategy, actively incorporating elements related to legacies into the early stages of bidding projects - to be addressed as soon as the event is obtained and by monitoring progress made towards specific objectives - would be largely beneficial.

With this in mind, the aim of the symposium is to bring international specialists together to discuss and review scientific work and research programs on the topic. The goal is also to encourage dialogue and consider research perspectives that are likely to renew these discussions, particularly in the perspective of Paris 2024.

The symposium will be opened by Thierry Terret, Ministerial Delegate to the 2024 Olympics and Paralympic Games.

Please note reservations for this conference are mandatory.
