Join us for a special lecture given by Dr. Kathleen Wickham, professor of journalism at the University of Mississippi (and currently International Chair of the Humanities and Social Sciences at Rennes 2 University).

Professor Wickham will lecture on the Agence France-Presse reporter Paul Guihard, the only journalist killed in the United States during the civil rights era.

Guihard, who was reared in St Malo during World War II, was murdered in 1962 by an unknown assailant during a riot at the University of Mississippi protesting the enrollment of James Meredith, the first African-American student admitted to the university. In 2009, journalism students at the University of Mississippi installed a memorial bench and historical marker honoring Paul Guihard.

In her book “We Believed We Were Immortal” Dr. Wickham presents the story of Paul Guihard which includes an interview with his brother, Alain Guihard of Lyon.

Professor Wickham’s lecture on Paul Guihard will be presented March 15 at 10:45 heures in Amphi-E2.
