Objectives

The objective of this training is to offer a course that takes into account the richness and diversity of the Hispanic world so that the degree awarded is an assurance of competence in Hispanic language, literature and civilization. It provides support to students to improve their proficiency in Spanish and gives them the skills and methods they need for knowledge acquisition.

Preparation for the competitive teaching examinations is particularly thorough and effective. It is based on training that has been carefully developed to complement the course throughout and designed with a balanced topic base that includes learning Spanish and studying Spanish civilizations and literature. Rennes 2 Spanish students have a record of achieving excellent results in the national competitive exams, which is proof of the high standards of the training offered by the university’s Spanish department.

Skills

In relation to languages, students will be able to understand (in oral and written form) a complex text or document and express themselves correctly, precisely and clearly. They will also be able to reflect on the Spanish language as it is spoken and written in both Spain and Latin America.

In relation to literature, students will be acquainted with the history of Hispanic literature and be able to read and study complete works. They will be proficient in text analysis methods and the technique of writing a literary dissertation. They will be able to carry out an organized and reasoned reflection on a work or literary form.

In relation to civilization, students will gain a solid knowledge of the chronology of Spanish-speaking countries and will be able to highlight major events as well as understand the issues at stake in each major period and in each geographical area concerned. They will become proficient in the civilization document analysis technique and historical essay writing.

In relation to image commentary, students will gain a good knowledge of the iconography and cinema of Spanish-speaking countries. They will be able to comment on a still or moving image.

Course Content

Year 1 (L1): the Compulsory Core Teaching Units (UEFs) provide the necessary foundations in language, literature and history to lay the base to further enhance knowledge in Years 2 and 3 (L2 and L3). The work focuses on methodology, comprehension, grammar and translation, chronology and exploration of literary theories and genres (Spain, Hispanic America).

Year 2 (L2): specialization is divided into geographical areas and scientific fields (historical periods, literature); language teaching is introduced.

Year 3 (L3): further specialization in scientific fields, strengthening of analytical techniques and language proficiency to prepare students for further study on a Master’s course or for the competitive examinations.
